"I take full responsibility for the defeat."
These were the words of Fernando Santos, head coach of the Azerbaijan national football team, following their heavy 0-6 defeat against Sweden in the UEFA Nations League.
Speaking to Idman.biz, the Portuguese coach reflected on the crushing loss:
"In previous games, I believed we were on the right track. However, I cannot say the same about today's match. I take full responsibility for the defeat. I design the team's tactical setup and decide the lineup. Although we prepared well for this match, we could leverage the speed of our two forwards up front. Unfortunately, that strategy didn’t work for us. This game has been a lesson for me. We must work harder on ourselves. I am not one of those coaches who shifts blame onto others. If we lose by such a big margin, the responsibility lies with me."
This defeat also resulted in Azerbaijan's relegation to League D.
