First and heavy blow for Fernando Santos

The “Swedish disaster” will not only be remembered as the match where the Azerbaijan national team was relegated to the D League of the UEFA Nations League—a group primarily comprising amateur-level teams—but also for the anti-records set by head coach Fernando Santos.

According to Idman.biz, our team, unfortunately accustomed to heavy defeats, has now suffered a 0:6 loss for the fifth time, having previously been beaten by margins as large as 0:7, 0:8, and even 0:10.

For Fernando Santos, however, this 0:6 defeat marks a first in his career and a particularly heavy blow.

Before this, the 70-year-old coach’s worst defeats involved four-goal margins. During his time at AEK, he lost 1:5 to Zenit in the UEFA Cup and 0:4 to Iraklis in the Greek league. He also suffered 0:4 defeats while managing Estrela Amadora and Sporting.

The misfortunes for Santos don’t end there. The Portuguese coach has now gone 11 matches without tasting victory. A five-match winless streak that began during his tenure at Beşiktaş has extended to six games with the Azerbaijan national team. In his 36-year managerial career, he has never experienced such a prolonged series of failures.
