"The draw made me face very difficult opponents. In each of the 4 meetings I held, I fought with strong and titled boxers.
Idman.biz reports that the national boxer Nijat Huseynov (51 kg), who won a license for the Paris-2024 Summer Olympic Games, told the website of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation.
The two-time European champion of Azerbaijan evaluated his performance at the 1st World Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Busto Arsizio, Italy, where he qualified for the French capital. He said that he had only one goal when he went to the competition: "Our team was very well prepared. I'm in good shape now and I was confident going into Italy. My goal was only to advance to the semi-finals and return home with a license. As for my battles, each one was difficult. At the start, I eliminated the Indian bronze medalist of the world championship Deepak Deepak, followed by the Georgian finalist of the world championship, the European champion Sahil Alahverdov.”
According to Huseynov, he reached the 1/8 final more comfortably and was confident that he would win the match against the Armenian Rudolf Garboyan, the runner-up of the European Championship: "Because I beat him once in the final of the U-22 European Championship. When I looked into his eyes, I could feel that he was afraid of me. In the end, I won the stage with a confident fight."
Nijat defeated Roscoe Hill (USA) in the 1/4 finals thanks to his perseverance: "After losing to him in the first round, I gathered myself. I had defeated the strongest so far. I only thought about winning and getting a license. Thankfully, I showed perseverance against another finalist of the world championship and won."
The leader of the team stressed that he will prepare for Paris-2024: "My goal is to get in better shape and win the first gold medal in boxing for Azerbaijan. I will only think about the championship at the Olympics."
It should be noted that Murad Allahverdiyev (80 kg) and Mahammad Abdullayev (+92 kg) formalized their participation in the Olympics before Huseynov.
