In Budva, Montenegro, the quarterfinals of the IBA Youth Men's and Women's World Boxing Championships has concluded, with five Azerbaijani boxers advancing to the semifinals.
Azerbaijani boxer Aynur Mikayilova (57 kg) defeated Hungary's Reka Varga Sara, securing at least a bronze and marking a historic achievement as the first Azerbaijani female boxer to reach the podium in this competition, Idman.biz reports.
Mikayilova will face Turkiye’s Pinar Benek in the semifinals.
In the men’s categories, Mahammadali Gasimzade (60 kg) defeated France’s Sandro Spica with a decisive 5-0, setting up a semifinal match with Russia’s Platon Kozlov. Meanwhile, Zidan Humbatov (51 kg) also triumphed in a close 3-2 victory over Tajikistan’s Meroj Sufijonova and is set to face Colombia’s Justin Morena in the next round.
Previously, Bilalhabashi Nazarov (48 kg) and Ali Abdullayev (63.5 kg) had already earned semifinal spots, securing Azerbaijan's impressive presence in the tournament's final stages.
The semifinal matches will take place later today.
