"This is a historical success of Azerbaijani chess. Until now, we have not had 4 gold medals at once."
Farid Abbasov, the head coach of the Azerbaijani national chess team, told İdman.biz.
He commented on the team's successful performance at the European Championship held in Mamaia, Romania. Abbasov said that the historical result is not accidental, because the chess players have undergone various trainings and prepared very seriously for these competitions: "Azerbaijan was represented by 44 chess players in the competition. Mohammad Kazimzade, Mehriban Ahmadli (both U-8), Ahmad Khagan (U-12) and Rustam Rustamov (U-14) won gold medals in their age categories. We have the strongest group. 18-year-olds - Ayan Allahverdiyeva and Khazar Babazade won silver medals. I am sure that they will soon have a successful future in big chess. We have a very promising chess player, Saadat Bashirli won a bronze medal. This is his second medal in the championship. Bashirli won a silver medal in 2019 at the age of 8. For the first time in history, Azerbaijan became the first in the European Championship among 47 countries in the team score. Thanks to everyone for their help, it's a total win."
It should be noted that Azerbaijani chess players achieved a record result by winning 4 gold medals at the European Junior Championship for the first time.
