The prestigious Battle of Champions chess tournament is underway at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, with the second day of action featuring the final three rounds of the rapid format.
Azerbaijan’s reigning national champions faced world-class opponents in today’s matches, Idman.biz reports.
In the men's section, Rauf Mammadov took on former World Cup winner Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan, while in the women's event, Gunay Mammadzada clashed with former World and European Champion Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria.
After the first three rounds of rapid play, both Azerbaijani players hold a 2–1 lead in their respective matchups.
The tournament will continue tomorrow, April 30, with the blitz rounds. The overall champions will be determined by the combined scores of both the rapid and blitz games.
