The Romania-Netherlands match of EURO-2024 last-16 was remembered with interesting moments.
As Idman.biz reports, IFFHS has prepared a statistical report on this match.
The Netherlands have reached the Euro quarter-finals for the first time since 2008.
The Netherlands ended a run of 3 straight defeats in the Euro knockout rounds at the tournament:
1-2 vs Portugal in 2004 (semifinal),
1-3 vs Russia in 2008 (quarterfinal),
0-2 vs Czech Republic in 2021 (round of 16).
The last Euro knockout game won by “Oranje” was 6-1 vs Yugoslavia in 2000.
Romania have only won 2 of their 20 games at the Euros (6 draws, 12 losses).
Cody Gakpo has scored his third goal at Euro 2024 and joined Mikautadze, Musiala and Schranz as top scorers of the tournament.
Gakpo has now scored 6 goals at major international tournaments (also 3 in World Cup 2022).
He became the 3rd player to score 3+ goals for the Netherlands at 2+ different major tournaments, after:
Johnny Rep (4 in World Cup 1974, 3 in World Cup 1978),
Dennis Bergkamp (3 in Euro 1992, 3 in World Cup 1994, 3 in World Cup 1998).
Gakpo is the 2nd European player to score the most goals (6) in the World Cup 2022 and Euro 2024 combined, after Mbappé (9).
Gakpo is the first Dutch player to score and assist in a Euro knockout round game since Frank Rijkaard vs Denmark in the Euro 1992.
Gakpo is the youngest Dutch player (25 years 56 days) to score and assist in a knockout match in a major tournament since Marco van Basten in the final of Euro 1988 vs Soviet Union (23 years 238 days).
Donyell Malen (Netherlands) became the 4th substitute player to score 2+ goals in a Euro match in the history of the competition, after:
Dieter Müller (Germany, 3 vs Czechoslovakia in 1976),
Oliver Bierhoff (Germany, 2 vs Czech Republic in 1996, including “golden goal”),
Savo Milosevic (Yugoslavia, 2 vs Slovenia in 2000).
Malen achieved the first brace of this Euro (in the 43rd game of the tournament!)
Pierre van Hooijdonk is the only player with more goals for “Oranje” as a substitute (10) than Donyell Malen (now 8, level with Klaas Jan Huntelaar).
Xavi Simons (Netherlands) is the first player at Euro 2024 to provide 3+ assists and the 2nd to provide 2+ assists in a single game at the tournament.
