Mahir Emreli received his second red card while playing for the Azerbaijan national team.
According to Idman.biz, the 27-year-old forward faced this penalty in his 50th milestone game. Emreli, who had previously been sent off during a match against Slovakia, was again shown the red card in the Nations League match. His first dismissal came during a home game against Luxembourg on September 5, 2020. Azerbaijan lost that match 1-2, and the team currently trails Slovakia 1-3.
Interestingly, in that 2020 match, Mahir received his red card as early as the 25th minute. At that point, the score was also tied, just like it was this time when it was 1-1. Both opponents capitalized on their numerical advantage to secure a win. A curious similarity is that both matches featured own goals: Anton Kryvotsyuk against Luxembourg, and Rahil Mammadov this time against Slovakia.
Emreli stands out as the national team’s forward with the most red cards. Typically, it’s the defensive players who receive such penalties. Among the two-time offenders are defenders like Aslan Karimov, Badavi Huseynov, Samir Abasov, Rasim Abishov, and Sasha Yunisoglu. However, the unfortunate record belongs to Tarlan Ahmadov, who has been sent off four times.
Azerbaijan have lost all four of their Nations League matches this year.
