Golden Era in the Past: Analyzing AJAX - OPPONENT REVIEW

Azerbaijan's Qarabag will face the most decorated club in the Netherlands, Ajax, in the UEFA Europa League. Ajax has won the national championship 36 times, the national cup 20 times, and the supercup 9 times.

As reported by Idman.biz, the club has also secured prestigious international titles, including 3 Champions Cups, 1 Champions League, 1 UEFA Cup, 3 UEFA Super Cups, 1 Cup Winners' Cup, 1 Intertoto Cup, and 2 Intercontinental Cups.

Despite this impressive collection of titles, Ajax's Golden Era seems to be in the past. Their most recent international triumphs came in 1995, when they won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Intercontinental Cup. Since then, they reached the Europa League final only once in 2017.

In the national championship, Ajax last claimed the title in the 2021/2022 season. The following season, they finished in 5th place, and currently, they are positioned similarly with 16 points from 7 games in this season.

In continental competitions, Ajax has played 470 matches so far, achieving 230 victories, 101 draws, and suffering 139 defeats, with a goal difference of 813-511. In their 76th match against Qarabag in the Europa League, they have 35 wins, 16 draws, and 24 losses, with a goal difference of 110-83.

Last season, Ajax finished 3rd in their group alongside Brighton, Marseille, and AEK with just 5 points. In the current season, they began their Europa League campaign with victories against Serbian club Vojvodina (1:0, 3:1) in the second qualifying round and knocked out Greek team Panathinaikos after a penalty shootout (13:12) following two 1-0 victories. They started the group stage with a 4-0 home win over Besiktas, then drew 1-1 in their away match against Slavia Prague.

In these 8 matches, Ajax scored 17 goals through 10 different players. Chuba Akpom and Mika Godts each scored 3 goals, while Kian Fitz-Jim, Kenneth Taylor, and Branco van den Boomen netted 2 goals. In the domestic league, the top scorers are Wout Weghorst and Davy Klaassen, each with 3 goals.

The upcoming match is set to take place in Baku on October 24.
