Azerbaijan national team player Musa Gurbanli shared his thoughts ahead of the upcoming match against Estonia in the UEFA Nations League.
In an interview with Idman.biz, the 22-year-old forward discussed his recovery from injury, his experience in Sweden, and the team’s goals for the future.
Regarding his current form, Gurbanli said:
"I got injured at the beginning of the season and had to undergo surgery. I’ve just started playing again, and I’m working to get back to my optimal form. Once that happens, everything will fall into place."
When asked about new head coach Fernando Santos’ philosophy, he responded:
"Every coach has his own style. Fernando Santos is a great coach, and his achievements speak for themselves. This is my first training camp under him, and we, as players, need to adapt to his philosophy. Once we sync with his vision, the results will improve."
Reflecting on his time playing in Sweden with Djurgårdens IF, he said:
"It was tough, especially mentally. I knew the challenges I’d face as a young Azerbaijani player in Europe. I had high expectations for myself, and that made it difficult at times. But I’m trying to turn it into a positive experience. Without challenges, there can be no success in a footballer’s career. I’m only 22, at the start of my career, and even though things didn’t go well at Djurgården, I consider it valuable experience that I can learn from."
On Estonia's squad, which includes several foreign-based players, Gurbanli commented:
"I don't know the players individually or where they play. Sometimes, even strong teams lose to weaker ones. What matters is focusing on our own game and improving. If we do that, the results will come."
Finally, he acknowledged his recent return from injury:
"Every player dreams of playing for the national team. I’ve just recovered and haven't played many matches yet, but now I’m here. We’re all ready to give our best for the national team."
The Azerbaijan vs. Estonia match is set to take place at the Gabala City Stadium on November 16 at 18:00.
