Ahead of the UEFA Nations League match against Estonia, Azerbaijan national team head coach Fernando Santos shared his thoughts on the team's performance and training.
According to Idman.biz, a press conference held before the game in Gabala, Santos explained why the team's last training session was scheduled for the first half of the day:
"The reason for holding the training in the morning was to ensure the players had more time to rest before the match," Santos said. "Our team has been training well and preparing for the game, so we wanted to make sure we have 24 hours to be fully ready for the match."
Reflecting on the team's results, which have seen them fail to earn points in their first four matches, he commented:
"When analyzing the games, we look at the shortcomings. In the last two matches, the team played well. The players are improving. Against Estonia away, we played well, everything was in order, but we conceded unexpected goals and lost. We see the mistakes we made, and we are working to correct them. In the match against Slovakia, we were also playing well until we had a red card, and we were left with 10 men. Football is all about small details."
Santos also spoke about his team's motivation and preparation for the upcoming match:
"Our players have been training very well, they are highly motivated and determined to give their best. They are doing everything they can to achieve a positive result tomorrow. We have set our goals, and we are improving from game to game. We are working hard to reach the places we want."
Regarding his contract and long-term goals, Santos said:
"I came here to work until 2028. The goal is to build a strong team. We want to achieve things that Azerbaijan has never done before. We will evaluate everything in 2027."
The Azerbaijan vs. Estonia match is set to take place at Gabala City Stadium on November 16 at 18:00.
