As the final round of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League C League approaches, it has been confirmed that the Azerbaijan national team will not avoid finishing in last place in its group.
According to Idman.biz, depending on the results of the upcoming matches, our team could either drop directly to League D or face a playoff against the second-place team from a lower league to stay in League C.
If Azerbaijan were to fall to League D — a more likely scenario — one of the potential opponents could be Andorra. So far, only Andorra has confirmed it will play in a lower league in the next Nations League. The top two teams among the bottom-placed teams in League C will have a chance to stay in the league.
For Azerbaijan to stay in League C, they must win their match tomorrow, and Luxembourg, with two points, must lose to Northern Ireland at home. With Sweden already securing promotion to League B, there is some hope for head coach Fernando Santos.
A draw could also suffice for our team, but for this to happen, Luxembourg would need to lose by 4-5 goals at home.
In this case, Azerbaijan would face one of the teams still fighting for positions in the final round, including Gibraltar, San Marino, or Liechtenstein, who are in the C League. The draw for the playoff matches will take place this week, on November 22, with the games scheduled for March 2026.
