Veteran Azerbaijani footballer Mahmud Gurbanov has reacted calmly to Qarabag defender Badavi Huseynov matching his record for the number of championship titles.
Gurbanov shared his thoughts in an interview with Report, Idman.biz reports.
The former national team player and coach said he had expected it:
"My reaction is normal. Records are meant to be broken at some point. It's normal that Badavi Huseynov has caught up with me. Qarabag has been dominating the Azerbaijani league for years. It was inevitable that one of their players would eventually match or surpass existing records. I take it in stride."
For reference, Mahmud Gurbanov claimed 11 gold medals across six different clubs during his career. The former midfielder celebrated championships with Kapaz (1994/95, 1997/98, 1998/99), Neftchi (1996/97, 2003/04, 2004/05), Shamkir (1999/2000, 2000/01), Khazar Lankaran (2006/07), Inter Baku (2007/08), and FC Baku (2008/09).
