“The Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation actively hosts international competitions in both Olympic and non-Olympic disciplines, but this is the first time we are organizing a European Championship in TeamGym,” said Nurlana Mammadzada, the Secretary General of the national federation.
According to Idman.biz, Mammadzada highlighted that TeamGym is a relatively young sport within European gymnastics: "It is particularly popular in Scandinavia, but it also has fans in other European countries. Since 2019, we have been working on developing this discipline in Azerbaijan, and our national team is participating in the championship. As the name suggests, this is a team-based competition where collective results are key."
She also noted that while some of the equipment used in TeamGym resembles those in other gymnastics disciplines, there are distinct differences: "For example, the mini-trampoline called a trampet differs from the one used in trampoline gymnastics."
Mammadzada emphasized the strong interest in the European Championship: "Fans of the participating teams have traveled to Baku, and over 800 delegates from the teams are here. More than 500 gymnasts from 14 countries will compete in this event."
