Yashar Najafov: "I can't find an answer to this question"

Azerbaijan national judoka Yashar Najafov (66 kg) gave an interview to the press service of the federation.

As per Idman.biz, he spoke about his introduction to this sport, his difficulties and future threats.

- How was your first interaction with judo?

- I would be 8-9 years old. In those years, Elnur Mammadli became the Olympic champion. I had no idea about sports. I was a child, I didn't know. At that time, we were staying at Gara Garayev. There was an old Locomotive hall there. When we passed by, we saw the hall and my mother asked my father to send me to sports. After that, my brother and I signed up for judo. My brother went to study, and I stayed in judo.

- What difficulties did you experience while practicing sports as a child?

- There were times when we stayed for rent. 7-8 years, maybe more. In those days, I was busy with sports. My family helped me. As a child, I didn't need much. It was just my food and drink. My father did it all. When I moved to Bina, the road there became difficult. But that didn't stop me either. There were times when it was impossible to go home. I slept in the hall.

- Have you thought about quitting judo?

- There are ups and downs in the career of every athlete. I have had many too. I also wanted to quit sports. I said, "This is not working, what should I do?" But I still persevered. My family and personal trainer also supported me. They have always believed me about it. I had a lot of injuries on my knee and shoulder. 70 percent of my body consists of injuries. Despite that, I have not turned away from my goals.

- What would you do without judo?

- I ask myself this question many times. Believe it or not, I can't find an answer to this question. Still, if I had this chance in life, I would choose sports. I can't do anything else.

- If you win a medal at the Olympic Games, who will you dedicate it to?

- My mother is the person who expects my victory the most. He supports me both when I win and when I lose. One of the biggest reasons I stay in the sport is my mother. One of my biggest dreams is to win an Olympic medal and tell my mom, "Your son did it."
