"On July 26, at the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games held in Paris, the capital of France, the reporter of France2, the national television channel of France, showed discrimination during the parade of Azerbaijani and Armenian athletes and accused Azerbaijan of clashes with Armenia. At the same time, he called Armenia a friend of France and noted that this year was remembered for the Armenian people as the fall of Nagorno-Karabakh by the Azerbaijani army.
Idman.biz reports, it was announced in a joint statement by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) and the National Olympic Committee (NOC).
The statement also said: “This is a de facto violation of the Fundamental Principles of the Olympic Charter. Those principles have been recognized and supported in recent years by several United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolutions, including the explicit “Recognition of the Fundamental Principles of the Olympic Charter” (A/RES/78/10). The charter clearly states that "the mission of the IOC is to promote Olympism throughout the world, to lead the Olympic Movement, and to oppose any political or commercial exploitation of sports and athletes."
Regarding the incident, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the National Olympic Committee sent an official protest letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The letter states that such disrespectful attitude of the state TV channel towards Azerbaijan is a clear violation of the Olympic Charter. Such propaganda is contrary to the spirit of the games and serves to undermine peace efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Therefore, the IOC has been asked to take a firm stand against the politicization of sports during the Paris-2024 Olympics, and to issue a public statement to the French Government, the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, as well as the aforementioned TV channel.
