After 16 years: Hidayat Heydarov takes Olympic men’s -73 kg title

The Azerbaijan national team won their first medal at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

Hidayat Heydarov (-73 kg) scooped up the gold medal after defeating all his opponents, per Idman.biz.

The Azerbaijani athlete raised the Azerbaijani flag and sang our national anthem in Paris.

Hidayat's success was the 8th gold medal of Azerbaijani athletes at the Olympic Games. The national team, made their debut as an independent country in Atlanta 1996, signed it in the 8th Olympics. There were 7 golds in the previous 7 competitions.

Heydarov is the second judoka to become an Olympic Champion. His coach Elnur Mammadli signed the first such success. 16 years after Beijing 2008, Azerbaijan won the second gold.

3 of the other gold medals at the Olympics were won by freestyle wrestlers, 1 by a Greco-Roman wrestler, 1 by a shot putter, and 1 by a taekwondo player.
