Azerbaijani team secure 17th medal at World Taekwondo Championships

The Azerbaijani national taekwondo team has achieved a significant milestone by winning their 17th medal at the World Taekwondo Junior Championships.

Idman.biz reports that the team has now advanced to the podium 16 times, with Vasif Salimov earning a bronze medal in the 63 kg weight category at the recent World Cup held in South Korea.

This achievement marks a triumphant return to the podium for Azerbaijani athletes, who last secured a medal in 2018 when Javad Aghayev won gold and Khanoglan Karimov claimed silver. Interestingly, both of these previous successes were also in the 63 kg weight category, while the silver medal in 2018 was earned in the 51 kg category.

The absence of the World Cup in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lack of medals in 2022 had left a longing for success in these competitions. Vasif Salimov's bronze medal is now the 8th bronze medal won by Azerbaijan in the history of the tournament, adding to a total of 4 gold and 5 silver medals.

Since its inception in 1996, the World Taekwondo Junior Championships has been held 14 times. Azerbaijan's journey in this championship began with its first medal at the inaugural World Cup in 1996, when Fagan Umudov won silver in the 72 kg weight category.
