U23 World Championship: Three Azerbaijani wrestlers with bronze hope

The U23 World Wrestling Championship has kicked off today in Tirana, Albania.

Idman.biz reports that on the first day, Greco-Roman wrestlers took to the mat, with five Azerbaijani athletes competing for medals.

60 kg:
Nihad Guluzade defeated Yasuhito Morini (Japan) 6:3 in the opening round. In the 1/8 final, he overpowered American Maxwell Blake 9:0, and then eliminated Iran’s Mohammadmehdi Jafar Gholampour (10:5). However, Nihad couldn't replicate this success in the semifinal, losing to Uzbekistan's Alisher Ganiev. He now has a chance to compete for the bronze medal.

67 kg:
Farid Khalilov started in the qualification round, defeating Niklas Jan Olov (Sweden) but lost to Razzak Beishekeev (Kyrgyzstan) in the next round. As his opponent advanced to the final, Farid now has a shot at bronze and will enter the repechage rounds.

72 kg:
Ruslan Nurullayev won his first match against Illia Valeuski (AIN), with a score of 8:7. However, in the 1/8 final, he was defeated by Abror Atabaev (Uzbekistan).

82 kg:
Starting from the 1/8 final, Elmin Aliyev secured dominant victories over Poland’s Islam Aliyev (9:0) and China’s Kun Huang (8:0). In the semifinal, he faced Beka Melelashvili (USA). The match ended 3:3, but since Melelashvili scored the last point, he advanced to the final, leaving Elmin with a chance for bronze.

97 kg:
Murad Ahmadliyev defeated Ukraine’s Yurii Dorohan 5:2 in the first round but lost 3:4 to Algot Kaellman from Sweden in the next match.

The U-23 World Championship will conclude on October 27.
