Historic victory for Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestlers

The World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship in Tirana, Albania, has ended with a historic result for Azerbaijan.

Idman.biz reports that the Azerbaijani team secured the title of world champions with a total of 85 points, winning three impressive gold medals. This marks the team’s second consecutive world championship title, a feat that placed them 34 points ahead of their closest rival, Iran.

This victory has set multiple records for Azerbaijani wrestling. Not only did the Greco-Roman team become the first Azerbaijani wrestling team to achieve two consecutive world championships, but they also made history by becoming the first to win three gold medals in a single championship.

Notable contributions to this victory came from Eldaniz Azizli (55 kg), Nihat Mammadli (63 kg), and Ulvu Ganizade (72 kg), each securing a gold medal and adding 25 points to the team’s total. Making his debut, Gurban Gurbanov (82 kg) placed fifth, earning an additional 10 points for the team.
